Construction of a new grammar school in Haan
In a Europe-wide tendering procedure, we were awarded the contract for the turnkey construction of a new grammar school for approx. 850 students in Haan. The contract took the form of a PPP contract including financing, complete planning services, construction and operational maintenance over 25 years by the MBN Facility Management department.
The implementation of the urban development concept for the Haan grammar school as well as the design and implementation planning was developed and carried out by us together with the architectural office Kottmair from Cologne.
During the shell construction phase, the state government of NRW decided to change the grammar school system from G8 to G9. Therefore it was necessary to add one floor to the new building compared to the planned design.
The new six-storey building with a gross floor area of approx. 13,000 m2 was erected while the school was still in operation. The small distance of only 4.5 m between existing school operations and the new building site was a real challenge in terms of construction site logistics.
In order to create the necessary space for the new building, the existing school building was first restructured for school use and additionally extended by class containers. The construction site has an ascending terrain with a height difference of 15 m. In addition, 95 % of the building ground consists of rock. For the excavation pit, approx. 32,000 m3 of rock were driven and driven away. Slopes up to 15 m in height had to be secured with back-anchored steel nets and reinforced shotcrete walls.
The compact new building is designed from rhomboid-shaped beams with rounded corners. The facade with curtain-type aluminium composite panels and horizontal bands of windows creates a harmonious overall appearance. The ground floor houses the striking foyer with break hall, the cafeteria, the library and the administration. Rooms for humanities and natural sciences are each located on a separate floor.
The lowest floor with its assembly hall – the garden floor – also serves as a theatre with 450 seats for the cultural events of the city of Haan. Even before the completion of the modern school building, demolition work will begin on the existing contaminated old building of the school. On the resulting area, the schoolyard and outdoor facilities will be redesigned with integration of the existing triple sports hall. The completion of the large building project is scheduled for August 2020, so that the students can start their education in new rooms after the holidays.
